With just one week on Maui, visitors may only have time to make a trip to Haleakala and take in a Luau between snorkeling, tanning, and down time. With more than a week's stay, though, consider a trip along West Maui's Highway 30–which eventually turns into 340. There is much to see along Highway 30, but save stops at Maui's Ocean Center, the town of Lahaina, and the shops at Kaanapali for day trips.

While travelers should be on their way to Hana by 8 am, it is easier to wait until after breakfast before heading out onto Highway 30. Take time for breakfast and let the locals who commute along this road get to work.

As with the road to Hana, plan to take in a few spots rather than trying to see everything. Make sure the gas tank is full, pack a lunch, take bottled water, and throw hiking boots and a bathing suit in the back seat.
