The Lake District National Park in northern Britain encompasses nearly 900 square miles of picturesque scenery. Calm lakes are guarded by majestic mountains. England’s highest mountain, Scafall Pike, and largest lake, Windermere are in this area. The Lakeland area provides habitat for wildlife including both roe and red deer. According to the National Park District golden eagles were absent for over 200 years but have now returned to this scenic area. White-washed farmhouses and quaint old buildings dot the land and provide interesting exploration sites for tourists.

Dove Cottage - William and Dorothy Wordsworth

One of the greatest of English poets, William Wordsworth, is closely associated with the Lake District. He was born at Cockermouth in 1770 and attended Hawkshead Grammar School. With his sister Dorothy he moved into a small cottage in 1799 named Dove Cottage. After his marriage in 1802, he brought his wife back to this cottage and lived there for the next six years.

This cottage life was conducive to writing poetry for Wordsworth. Touring this cottage allows the visitor to see the battered suitcase Wordsworth used in his travels and the cuckoo clock from Germany that was one of his prized possessions. An underground stream provided a natural refrigerator room. Also, one can see the Wordsworth’s children’s nursery room that a worried Aunt Dorothy insulated with newspaper to keep out the cold.
