The answer may in part, be associated with tourism, as well as with regional culture and lifestyle. For instance, some say that living in the West, and specifically being a Californian, is a state of mind. Interesting concept isn’t it? In asking a Bostonian for example, if living in Massachusetts required simply “a state of mind?” The response was that this ideology is absurd. This in its self spurs an interest in cultural and pioneering differences between the East and Western American states (territories.)

Of course from the beginning of time people have traveled and moved from one place to another, especially the wealthy. However, with the push for American westward expansion, a market for tourism as we know it today was created. As immigrants and frontier’s men from the East moved west, the folks left behind in the East watched with the rest of the world. Unlike the development of the eastern American states, most of the West was previously colonized by the Spanish. In the East, where native communities once lived, they had been far removed from the “savages” of the western states.

The Rail Road

Later in the 19th century with the connecting of East and West by Train, the American West and its vast Frontier would be changed for ever. Traveling by rail allowed the traveler to get to the West safer, in comfort, and of course in less time than any other mode of transportation of the day. The train also allowed for more convenient transport of personal belongings, supplies, merchandise, and etc. Of course, traveling by train was not a mode of transportation that was available or affordable to everyone. However, railroad companies certainly made tidy profits due to the new market of tourism that they helped to create by providing a new improved transportation that delivered the tourist to the Western Frontier and it’s experiences.
