In 1992, President George H.W. Bush signed a bill designating May as the official Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. May was the month of choice as it commemorated immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843. It's also the month of completion of the transcontinental railroad, which occurred on May 10, 1869. Most of the workers laying the tracks for the Transcontinental Railroad were Chinese immigrants.
