For a dyed-in-the-wool backpacker, it can be difficult to consider having porters and guides carry supplies and food while on an adventure travel tour in a developing country. Somehow, it seems like "cheating" to head to the top of a Nepali pass with nothing more than a daypack while a porter struggles under a heavy load, or to use a a sag-wagon to make your bike ride a bit easier. But the money guides and porters earn from tips contributes to their survival in often tough environments. It may also encourage locals to support preserving the environment and natural resources of the region.
Using Porters and Guides on an Adventure Trek or Tour
The fact is that hiring and tipping guides and porters is one of the best way for tourist dollars to make it directly into the hands of local people. For the visitor, porters and guides not only make the trek easier in terms of bearing loads and showing the way, they also make it safer, by identifying and helping travelers avoid dangers from poachers to wild animals.
For adventure travelers who buy pre-packaged tours, guides and porters are part of the deal. But, they can also be hired (usually much more cheaply) on the spot, through hotels or at local outfitting shops in popular trekking areas. Ask other travelers what they paid, and be prepared to bargain!
